Economy and Fun

Economy and Fun
By Mark Clarkson

If you are looking for a vehicle that could be seen as a bright and happy little car, then the Toyota Echo would be the right one for you. The Toyota Echo is a vehicle that is roomy, reliable, and economical. Certainly, this vehicle could be the kind of vehicle that would fit a college students budget. This vehicle has been designed and manufactured so as to compete with the Chevrolet Metro, the Daewoo Lanos, the Dodge Neon, the Ford Focus, the Honda Civic, the Hyundai Accent, the Kia Sephia, the Mazda Protg, the Mitsubishi Mirage, the Nissan Sentra, the Saturn SL, and the Suzuki Swift.

Toyota has changed its marketing strategy for this vehicle. For years, the automotive company has been marketing its vehicles with a heavy and standard kind of strategy. However, with the Toyota Echo, it has changed its mood and marketed this vehicle with fun and economy on its side.

The Toyota Echo has a front end that looks like the Ford Focus headlights and slope, however with the distinction that it is more appealing and is not as stretched as the latter. Overall, the Toyota Echo is a small yet stylish car. As per the Toyota Echos interior, it is interesting to note that the car manufacturer had placed and mounted the vehicles gauges high above the radio in the middle of the dashboard which is far different from the standard, and which the car manufacturer believes will assist in the reduction of eye fatigue and reduce the amount of time needed to switch from watching the road to monitoring speed. This vehicle sports a relatively large interior in the sedan entry level. It has the capacity to take in a maximum of five people in its spacious interior that sports upholstery bearing the color gray. As per its cargo volume, the Toyota Echo has 13.6 cubic feet of this, and adding up more room are the split rear folding seats.

The Toyota Echo comes with standard equipment that includes in its list aerodynamic multi-reflector halogen headlamps, color-keyed front and rear bumpers and door handles, dual black outside mirrors, windshield wipers with mist features, a tinted glass, P175/65R14 tires on steel wheels with full wheel covers, a center instrument cluster with a speedometer, a fuel gauge, a digital LCD odometer with twin tripmeters and warning lights, dual sun visors with mirror, fabric-trimmed 4-way adjustable front and rear seats with adjustable headrests, a tilt steering wheel, driver and front passenger air bag Supplemental Restraint System, center console storage compartments, dual glove compartments, a front passenger seat under-seat storage tray, dual front and rear cup holders, and a deluxe AM/FM ETR with four speakers.

'The Hunt' Isnt Over Yet

'The Hunt' Isnt Over Yet
By Glady Reign

Just when you think it is over, The Hunt has just another revelation to proclaim. The Volvo Car Corp. is declaring a 'do over' in its global online treasure hunt after all 21 finalists failed to solve the final puzzle within the given 24 hour time limit this weekend.

The 21 chosen finalists from all over the world gathered at their respective computer screens Saturday for their ultimate chance of claiming the much-anticipated Volvo treasures. The automakers treasure chest is filled with 50,000 in gold doubloons and a key to a new XC90. The midsize crossover SUV shares the P2 platform with the Volvo S80 and other huge cars from the brand. It features the powerful Yamaha V8 engine that produces 311 horsepower and 325 ftlbf of torque. The vehicle also features trusted parts like Volvo plugs, seatbelts, airbags, engines, radiators and more.

The lucky pirate will win a trip to recover the treasure chest from the waters depths somewhere in the world where it was buried. But it turned out that Volvo had all contestants 'at sea' with a final puzzle that proved too hard for even the hardiest pirates.

We really didn't see this coming, said Linda Gangeri, the national advertising manager for Volvo Cars of North America. Our Hunt has been tough from the beginning and we have been in awe of all the amazing puzzle-solving skills and sharp minds out there meeting us at every twist and turn. We really didn't expect to baffle our finalists with the final puzzle. Who knew a car company could keep 21 pirates from claiming precious treasure? For now, at least.

The famed online treasure hunt is a month-long campaign of the Swedish automaker in connection with Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. The Hunt has drawn more than 32,000 online contestants from 22 markets around the world. Participants solved a series of puzzles that led to a semi-final puzzle, Puzzle 21: World's End which was posted May 31. The first contestant from each country to submit the correct answer then went on to compete in the Final Leg. All participating markets were represented in the Final Leg with the exception of Italy, who did not have a participant submit a correct semi-final answer within the time limit.

The first of the 21 finalists to solve the 'do over' final puzzle Tuesday will be named the winner. The finalists include Andreas Aigner (Austria), Konstantin Popov (Bulgaria), Erin Chock (Canada), Dennis Leifheit (Germany), Cheuk Fung Leung (Hong Kong), Andreas (Indonesia), Yukio Takai (Japan), Siew Hang Teh (Malaysia), Patricia Gabriela Medrano Picon (Mexico), Liss Johansen (Norway), Aaron Joseph N. David (Philippines), Jarosaw Nowakowski (Poland), Ciprian Constantin Grosu (Romania), Alena Zvereva (Russia), Wilson Teo (Singapore), Jungtae Ahn (South Korea), Maria Qvick Faxa (Sweden), Shih-En Chen (Taiwan), Geranun Jiraboonyanon (Thailand), Karyn Burgess (United Kingdom), and Deborah LaValley (United States).

Deborah LaValley, 43, from Juneau, Alaska, is ready for the challenge. LaValley, who was also a participant of last year's Hunt, is thrilled with this year's game. I can't stop thinking about different scenarios or possible locations. I really have no idea what to expect. I'm just excited that I get a second try at claiming the treasure.

Once a winner has been announced by the automaker, both final puzzles will be posted on The Hunt Web site for all participants to test their puzzle solving powers one more time. Visitors can also gauge their prowess in solving the greatest mysteries of the deep online.

Glady Reign is a 32 year old is a consultant for an automotive firm based in Detroit, Mi. she is a native of the motor city and grew up around cars hence her expertise in the automotive field. You can visit Volvo plugs for more information.

Installation Guide iPod Adapter (Dension iPod Car Kit) 2

Installation Guide - iPod Adapter (Dension iPod Car Kit) 2
By Chimezirim Chinecherem Odimba

Dension Ice Link adapter installation is generally far easier than you would expect. The Ice Link lead simply connects to the CD changer socket found at the rear of your radio by push-fit connection and then to your iPod using your selected connection type.

The iPod can mount on your dash using a Dashmount vehicle-specific bracket or a universal bracket if there isn't a Dashmount bracket available for your vehicle, utilizing the included plate and screws. No wiring is necessary.

If you are using a changer and your socket is taken, you will need the FM iPod car kit. Here you can have the best or both worlds and use both your changer and iPod.

Dension Dock Cable iPod Ice Link Plus Adapter Installation:

The Ice Link lead simply connects to the CD changer socket found at the rear of your radio by push-fit connection and then to your iPod using the dock cable that will be located in your glove box for easy access. No wiring is necessary.

If you are using a changer and your socket is taken, you will need the FM iPod car kit.

Dension FM Modulator iPod Ice Link Plus Adapter Installation:

Slightly different from the above options, the Dension FM Modulator Ice Link has three connections to be made. To power the FM Modulator, you connect a switched 12V live and an earth to the unit from your cars wiring using the two included Scotch Locks.

This eliminates the need to solder, allowing a quick installation by any competent DIYer. You then disconnect the aerial lead from the rear of your radio and connect this in-line with the FM unit all by push-fit connection. The iPod mounts on your dash using the cradle fitted with the included plate and screws.

Dension Auxiliary iPod Ice Link Plus Adapter Installation:

The Auxiliary Ice Link lead simply connects to the auxiliary input connection (2 x phono connections) found on your car radio. This is by push-fit connection. It connects to your iPod using your selected connection type. To power the auxiliary adapter, connect a switched 12V live and an earth to the unit from your cars wiring using the two included Scotch Locks -- removing the need to solder. This makes it easy for any competent DIYer to complete the installation.

If you would like to have the installation carried out at your home or workplace, look for a mobile installer in the advert. Ask when you call them if they offer this service. You'll be surprised to find it's cheaper for someone to call to you and install it than to leave it at some Hi-tech garage.

Go to this site: car-audio-products-and-accessories.com and read the articles. They cover much on car audio. They will help you do a better job of your car audio.

However, if you choose to use the pros, go here for a professional installer if you're in the UK.

A New Lease on Leasing

A New Lease on Leasing
By Geoff Cohen

We all heard the death knoll for leasing a few years ago. Leasing lay flat on its back in the intensive care unit, gasping its last breaths before fading off to become another F&I memory. The pulse grew weaker, and we all knew it wouldnt be long before Leasing went to that great F&I office in the sky, to reminisce about the good old days with the twins, Rust proofing and Undercoating, and the prematurely demised Balloon Note.

But, wait a minutedid I hear a beep? Is there a pulse still left? Yes, and it appears to be growing stronger as we go. Leasing is back, maybe not as big as it once was, but back from deaths doorstep none the less.

Back in the late 80s, leasing was the new mystery. Lease calculations required the knowledge of a foreign language, with all the talk of residuals and money factors. As we went on, leasing became the darling of most dealerships (especially before Regulation L and disclosure came into play) and the typical Leasing Manager in every dealership was the highest paid employee who drove the most expensive car and had the flashiest gold Rolex. He was your high profit, low payment guru, who made deals magically appear from nothing. He knew all the lenders and all their programs, and did the business that no one else in the store wanted to do.

Suddenly, every dealership wanted to jump on the leasing bandwagon. Through the late 80s and the mid 90s, leasing continued to thrive, with some dealerships doing better than 85% of their retail business in leases. Everyone realized the leasing advantage; you could sell three cars to a customer over a 6 year period as opposed to one. The customer typically got more car than he expected for the payment he was making, and in theory, the dealership could build tomorrows used car inventory from the new car leases it made today. Soon, Lease Star, Lease Link, Lease Prophet and how many other leasing software programs hit the market and soon anyone in the dealership could push a button and get a lease quote in seconds. Suddenly, that high paid obnoxious lease manager was no longer such a valuable asset. Leasing companies, overrun with vehicles with absurdly high residual values, lost thousands of dollars per vehicle at lease end when these off-lease vehicles went to auction. Leasing companies like GECAL, Oxford, and Bank of America, all got out of the leasing business when residuals got too high and interest rates went too low! And the leasing gurus, if they were smart, became Special Finance Managers!

So why the recent rebirth of leasing? Well, first and foremost, it address the number question asked in every dealership in America Whats my payment? Manufacturers are using sub-vented leasing programs, which allows a manufacturers offer extraordinarily low rates, inflated residual values, or both in order to create super low attractive payments. The customer can still get more car, for less payment by leasing. Leasing, if done properly, can still lease a customer two to three cars over the 72 month term of a typical retail loan. Manufacturers like leasing because it allows them to control the future value of their vehicles, (If the bulk of leasing goes through the captive finance arm, they determine the residual value on these leases, which can directly effect used car values. High residuals mean higher resale values just look at American Honda Finance Corp or GMAC which will advance the higher of book or auction price for used vehicles purchased by the dealership at off lease sales.

Whats in it for the F&I manager? Not much in reality. Manufacturer warranties typically cover the vehicle for the term of the lease, so extended warranties are not an option. Most leases already include GAP coverage, so thats two down. Whats left is any rate markup that is available and excess wear and tear coverage. If your customer is in on a nationally advertised payment, its tough to mark up the rate to earn any profit. And while excess wear and tear coverage would seem top be a natural, many lenders are reluctant to advance for it. As such, the only way to include it in many leases is in the price of the vehicle. The opportunity for F&I backend is limited at best, and leaves little incentive for the F&I manager to really get behind leasing.

So, where is Leasing heading for? In order to survive, leasing has to be used selectively. Be careful who you offer a lease to. The customer that drives too many miles will be in for a rude awakening at lease end when the mileage penalties hit. The marginal credit customer, who may get approved on a second tier sub-vented lease, may have a hard time paying for the 100/300 liability insurance most leases require, since many insurance companied now use credit scores to determine premiums and rates for car insurance. Early termination liabilities must be fully disclosed and customers must understand their obligations under the lease. And dealerships must realize that a customer who makes his decision strictly on the monthly payment may have a problem next time around when this vehicle is no longer available at this low monthly payment. Another SSI score bites the dust!

And what do we do with the customer who comes in that low advertised monthly payment ands doesnt qualify for the program? If we already know that approximately 50% of the clientele surrounding a dealership fall into the sub-prime category, how do we address this issue? Be tactful, and respectful, while explaining that leasing a vehicle typically requires better credit than traditional financing.(If you are not certain of your dealerships demographics, email me and I will get you an Income & Market Analysis).

Be ready for customers who may currently be leasing their vehicles, but things have changed for them in the last few years. Economic conditions throughout the country, have had a dramatic effect on credit scores in the last few years. Good people have gotten hit with hard times, and while they may appear to qualify on the surface, many come in looking for a low lease payment to fit their new limited budget. This is why it is imperative that you are asking the appropriate questions when qualifying your customers on the lot. (If you would like a complimentary copy of a Lot Traffic Training just email me).

Leasing is not for everyone. If you attempt to make your store a leasing only destination, like branding yourself a special finance dealership, you effectively eliminate a segment of the marketplace that perceives you as a place they DONT want to do business with. Leasing, like special finance, must be worked properly to be effective. Make sure you have it available for any one who asks, but make sure youre leasing for your customers benefit, not yours! Remember what put leasing on the critical list is still lurking, and best practices need to be reviewed on a regular basis. Have you given your leasing department its annual check-up?

10 Tips for Safer Driving

10 Tips for Safer Driving
By John Machmiller

When you get in a vehicle to drive, it is usually for one of two reasons: to go somewhere or drive around leisurely. In either case, it is assumed you want to reach your destination without being involved in an accident. The following are ten tips for safer driving will increase your chances of reaching your destination without your involvement in an accident. For the most part these tips are common sense.

1. If the weather outside is frightful, stay at home, stay at home and finally stay at home! Adverse weather conditions increase your odds of being involved in an accident. Is your trip necessary? Can it wait until the conditions get better?

2. If you do have to drive in the bad weather conditions, pay attention to the surface on which are driving? Are the roads snowy or icy? Are they wet? Is there oil on the road? If so, are the water and oil creating slick roads? Are you driving on a muddy road?

3. When the driving conditions are not favorable, avoid going to fast. Whether sight is limited due to fog or the roads have become slick, allow yourself enough time to stop. Increasing your stopping distance will give you time to react better to a bad situation.

4. Speaking of stopping, whether you are in good or bad weather conditions, always leave one car length to the car in front of you. That way, if your vehicle is hit from behind, you will have enough time to steer away from the vehicle in front of you (assuming you are hit hard enough to reach the next vehicle).

5. Concentrate on driving. Avoid distractions like eating or drinking, changing radio stations, disruptive passengers, and talking on cell phones. Try eating or drinking before you leave or stop and eat somewhere. Choose your radio station before you start driving.

Before you go anywhere, let your passengers know your rules. You are driving, so you are in charge. Also, chances are your strict rules will be better than walking. So, I am pretty sure you will get your way. And cell phones have a place. They should be used for emergencies only. If you need to carry on a conversation, pull off to the side of the road until you are finished. And resume driving when you finish your conversation.

6. Another way to concentrate on driving is to keep your eyes moving at all times. First, of all, this will keep you from going into a dazed, hypnotic state. Also, you will be able to keep track of your speed and the traffic that is around you.

7. Speaking of keeping track of the traffic around you, check your blind spots before changing lanes. Sometimes vehicles sneak into your blind spots. A momentary peek is all that is necessary to keep you from an accident.

8. While we discuss changing or merging into other lanes of traffic: merge with the speed of traffic. Merging not only affects you and the vehicle you are getting in front of, but this action also has ramifications on the vehicles behind the other vehicle. Here is an example: when you are going up a ramp to merge onto the interstate, do not wait until the end of the ramp to 'floor' your gas pedal to go 55, 65, or 70 miles per hour. Chances are your vehicle cannot go from 35 to 55 mph at the snap of your fingers.

Without speeding up on the ramp you are endangering the vehicles on the interstate. Also, you have put the vehicles behind your vehicle on the ramp in a very precarious position - they now must merge like you decided to merge. You need to start to accelerate by pushing on your gas pedal at the beginning of the ramp. That way you will be going the speed of traffic at the end of the ramp. At that point, it will be easier to speed up or slow down to get into traffic.

By gradually speeding on the ramp to the get the proper speed by the end of the ramp you now do not compromise the safety of the others who need to use the ramp. And, if you are behind another vehicle who is going to use an on-ramp, give the other vehicle a chance to gain some speed before you get on the on-ramp. It will also be easier to merge if you are not right up against the back bumper of the car in front of you on the ramp.

9. Now if you have quite a distance to go, plan time for delays. If there are no delays, you will be at your destination early.

10. When it comes to children, people on bicycles, and aggressive drivers, expect the unexpected. Be a 'defensive driver' in the sense that you need to strategize a 'defense' to protect yourself and to protect them against the dangers they present.

Again, whether you are driving to a destination or you are driving for pure leisure, there are things you can do to avoid accidents. I hope the previous ten tips helped you think on what you can do be a safer driver.

Will there be Life after the Oil Runs Out?

Will there be Life after the Oil Runs Out?
By Robin Piggott

Europe is taking the Lead again in the search for suitable alternatives to the ever increasing price of Oil and the ever present threat of the greenhouse gas effect on the Environment. As prosperity grows so does our greed as we put more and more gas guzzling vehicles on the road in an attempt to impress our neighbours!

Is it really necessary to be changing that Car (we dont mentionSUVs, Jeeps, People Carriers, Range Rovers and the like in this column) every year or so? I dont think so! The Manufacturers and the Car Dealerswho have profits and shareholders to think about are bombarding us with news of the latest Models, the latest Deals and the latest tricks that our vehicles can perform and we have become used to this and fall for it every time! Here in Ireland the exponential growth of new Drivers on the road due to Prosperity, Demographics and Immigration is putting a strain on just about every aspect of our Infrastructure that you can think ofTraffic Flow; Noise Pollution; Air Pollution; Driving Test Waiting Lists; Road Improvement Programmes; Inner City Trade and so on. Whats the answer you might suggest?

Announced just last week the highly acceptable and Eco friendly B.E.S.T project(Bio Ethanol for SustainableTransport) was given its opening Fanfare in Stockholm Sweden, a country long known for its excellent Technological achievements and concern for its Citizens and the Environment.B.E.S.T is collaboration between three vehicle Manufacturers, Five Bioethanol Producers and Four Universities throughout Europe in a dynamic Plan to speed up the introduction of this alternative automotive propellant before we run out of time!Naturally enough the home base for this project is Stockholm and vehicle manufacturer Saab.Saab has long been known for its excellent Cars partly due to the fantastic success on the Motor Rally front in the sixties with Eric Carlsson and partly due to their Aeronautical activities which are the backbone of a very enterprising advertising campaign currently for the latest models in their stable.Saab is going to provide the base infrastructure for the project with some Test Cars and their obvious technical expertise.

It is an amazing concept and deserves the support of all the motoring organisations, every Government and every Motorist. The initial stage of the project consists of an expected 140 Bioethanal Pumps at ten specially selected locations which will include 8 Cities, 6 of which are EuropeanStockholm, Dublin(yippee!), Madrid, Rotterdam, La Spezia, Baskia, and Nanyang in China and Sao Paulo in Brazil.

In addition there has been included the Bio Fuel innovating Country Sweden and believe it or not the County of Somerset in England known for its strange accent and massive Cider production. Maybe one day in the distant future loading up with a bootful of apples might get you through a couple of days of motoring? Who is producing this fuel? Well, Sweden naturally, Brazil, Holland (they have always been very innovative) Great Britain and wait for it Ireland! With major contributions coming from Universities in China (Tsinghua); Sweden (Umea); Italy (Genoa) and U.K (Imperial College)

What the heck does Bioethanol do when its at home? Well the beneficial effect is that during driving, the amounts of CO2 emissions are counterbalanced by the removal of Co2 from the atmosphere by the crops that are grown to produce it. A fascinating concept and one that will gain momentum I am sure in the months and years ahead.Going back to SAAB it is a great credit to them that already nearly 5000 vehicles have been sold that are powered by this new technology and it shows that something as Eco friendly as BioEthanol can take on a life of its own given the right infrastructure.

The Green movement has long been regarded as a fringe group and viewed with suspicion by the masses much like the Anti Nuclear, Ban the Bomb campaigners throughout the Sixties. At that time Chernobyl was twenty years in the future. Any concerned citizen should view this ground breaking BEST project as certainly the best thing since the Internal Combustion Engine (I nearly said sliced Bread!)

Robin Piggott is the owner of Astral Driving School in Limerick Ireland and has always been intrigued with I.C.E. innovations. He is providing Learner Drivers with advanced skills for life on the road through his Web site and Blogs.Recently sharing his marketing experiences through new channels including a marketing driven blog.

What is the Hazard Perception Test

What is the Hazard Perception Test
By Tommy Connolly

The Hazard perception test is an electronic test taken on a computer. It doesn't use pedals or steering wheels, just the mouse is needed for the test. You will watch a series of video clips each lasting around a minute. The video clips include footage from all sorts of roads, from country lanes to suburban high streets to motorways. Each of the clips contain one or more developing hazards. As soon as you see a hazard click the mouse button, and the sooner you see a hazard the more points you will get. After you have recognized the hazard you may be required to take some action, like changing speed or direction.

After the driving theory test you have the option of a 3 minute break, and then you are shown a short tutorial video clip about how the test works. This part of the test is also taken on a computer, but you respond by clicking the mouse. The test consists of 14 short video clips lasting roughly a minute long, which feature everyday road scenes. In each of the clips there will be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards.

In the test you will have fourteen different hazard scenarios. In each of the different scenarios you will have to identify one or two different hazards. The 14 scenes are taken from a bank of around 200. An example of a hazard would be a car pulling out in front of you, as quickly as possible. When you do each scene there will be a window of time in which to spot the hazard, you get scored on how quickly you identify the hazard, the longer you take, the lower you score will be. Zero points will be awarded if you click too late or repeatedly.

The quicker you respond to the developing hazards the higher your score will be. The maximum marks for each hazard is 5. Unlike the theory test you are not able to review your answers, there is only one chance.

The pass mark for the hazard perception test is 44 out of 75. If you fail either section of the test, the theory of the hazard perception, then you will have t retake both of the exams when you resit and pay the fee all over again. So make sure you are very prepared.

Hazards to be aware of:

Events that may happen in front of the car such as;

  • Breakdown vehicle on bend
  • Furniture vans parked on bend (door open) with oncoming traffic.
  • Cyclist on country road
  • Vans parked with hazard warning lights on
  • School crossing and bus waiting with children crossing road
  • Parked vehicles/road works
  • Vehicle doing U turn on brow of hill
  • Green traffic light turns on approach
Something that might be joining you car's path such as;

  • Car emerging from left
  • Stray dog by kerb
  • Zebra crossing with pedestrians crossing
  • Vehicle emerges from left in road dip
  • Pedestrian trying to cross road
  • Car looking as though it may join traffic from right
  • Woman with pushchair ready to cross road
  • Blind man with dog by kerb
  • Vehicle edging out of side road from right
  • Zebra crossing with pedestrian crossing
  • Bus pulling out
  • Car late stopping at left hand junction
Events that may occur in opposite traffic such as;

  • Vehicle turning right across traffic
  • Car stopping in road to collect passenger
  • Parked car and oncoming car

Tesla Electric Car a Penny a Mile

Tesla Electric Car a Penny a Mile
By Maria Cuttini

The new Tesla electric car is hot! But, as the company website proudly claims, it burns rubber, not gasoline!

This is not just any old electric car. The Tesla electric car is a beauty and definitely one of a kind. It comes with a Lotus designed chassis and has better acceleration than a Lamborghini Murcielago.

The Tesla is more than twice as fuel efficient as the best hybrid car. It only costs about a penny a mile to drive, goes up to 250 miles on a single charge and all you have to do is plug it in every night like you do your cell phone or iPod.

Who said electric cars weren't fun?

Ever since the early days of automobiles over a hundred years ago, electric cars have always been considered to be dull and boring. Oh sure, an electric car was fine if you only had a short commute or had to shop at the local grocery and couldn't get there by foot or bicycle. But they were slow, ugly and hardly more than glorified golf carts.

But two Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, have changed all that forever. They've designed an electric car that's exciting to drive and gorgeous to look at!

The Tesla Roadster is a 100% electric, two-seater convertible that goes from zero to 60 mph in about 4 seconds, with a top speed of around 130 mph. It also has no clutch and a wide, flat torque curve, which means no matter which of the two gears you're driving in or how fast you're going, acceleration is instantaneous.

Whether you're at a stoplight or on the interstate and want to pass the car in front of you, just step on the pedal and off you go like a shot.

The Toyota Prius, on the other hand, which is the best selling hybrid, takes over ten seconds to go from zero to 60. Of course, the Prius isn't a sports car, but this comparison will give you an idea of just how efficient and well engineered an electric car can be. For example, the Tesla electric motor has only one moving part, yet it still cranks out 248 hp.

The car's energy comes from 6,831 lithium ion batteries. These are the same batteries you use to charge your laptop or cell phone. It comes with a portable charging pack in case you're traveling more than 125 miles from home and the batteries only take about 3 1/2 hours to fully charge.

By the way, the batteries are recyclable and Tesla guarantees them for five years or 100,000 miles.

However, if you want the thrill of owning the new Tesla, it's going to cost you a 100 grand. But, if all goes according to plan, the price will come down as more cars are sold. They've already got a second more affordable sports sedan in the works.

In the past, electric cars were designed by people who believed you shouldn't be driving at all and, if you were, you should be punished. It's no wonder they never caught on. But the Tesla electric car promises a sweet future!

Tips on Snowplowing

Tips on Snowplowing
By Matt Ide

Now that youve got your new snowplow, what do you do?

Its getting to be that time of the year. Soon the football game is going to be on during Turkey Day and you have just recently put the blade on the truck for the first time. In fact, you just might be new to driving a snowplow.

After last year, fighting the snow all winter with a measly plastic shovel or an antiquated snow blower that clogged up more snow than it threw, you decided that you werent going to go through that again. So, you went out and bought yourself a snowplow and are itching for the snow to fall.

Now that the blade is on the truck, do you know how to use it? For some, they decide that they will get the blade on and figure out how to use it afterwards. Well here are a few tips to help you so that you dont take out part of the house or a side of the garage.

First, make sure that your truck is prepared to deal with the rigors of plowing. You want to ensure that the battery is fresh and that all the hydraulics and moving pieces are in order.

Second, if you plan to plow during dark hours, which are probably going to happen, then you need to make sure that you have adequate lighting. Either make sure you have enough on the front of the plow or there are exterior lights that will keep the driveway well lit. Dont forget about tail lights and possibly putting a rear spot light on the truck.

Third, if you are new to plowing with your truck, you should go outside and visualize where you are going to dump the snow. This may not seem like a big deal now, but if you dont have a good idea of where all the snow is going to go and how far back you need to push it, you could end up with piles of snow that you cant throw back out of the way mid way through the winter.

These are just a few tips to help you with your snowplowing this year. With a little forethought, you should be able to have a breeze with your snowplowing this year.

Check Engine Light Goes On

Check Engine Light Goes On
By Naum Levinson

What to do if the check engine light goes on?

It does mean that you should get the car checked outas soon as possible. If you ignore this warning, you can damage some expensive components, and get poorgas mileage.

What this light is trying to tell you?

This light is a part of the On-Board Diagnostic system (OBD II)The engine systems performance is being controlled and monitored by computer. When the computer finds a problem in any system, it waits a little for the possibility that the faulty system will correct itself. If this doesn't happened, the computer turns onthe check engine light. At the same time, the computer stores a rouble code in the memory. This code identifies the system or component that is malfunctioning. Code can be read with the special scanning tool.

If the check engine light turns on, it will either blink or remainsolid, depending on the problem. The blinking light indicates a serious problem that requires immediate attention. Most of thetime it an engine misfire. In this case, the unburned fuelgets into the exhaust system where it can explode and severelydamage the catalytic converter. Repair will be expensive. The solid check engine light indicates a non-emergency, but thecar or truck should be checked ASAP.

Tip: on late model vehicles, loose gas cap will trigger the checkengine light. The first thing you do, try to tight your gas cap first. After a while, the light will turn off but the trouble code will remainin memory.

Audi's McNish Claims Provisional Front Row At Le Mans

Audi's McNish Claims Provisional Front Row At Le Mans
By Katie Jones

Allan McNish, in the number 2 Audi R10 TDI, claimed a provisional front row start position for the 75th Le Mans 24 Hours in the opening official qualifying session this Wednesday. This is anchored on the fact that McNish was denied the fastest time in the dying seconds of the race.

Scotsman McNish, aiming for provisional pole in his diesel-powered Audi R10 TDI until French Stephane Sarrazin of Peugeot, snatched the fastest time in the opening time trials for the 54-car field. McNishs 3 minutes and 26.916 secs, an average speed of 147.34mph around the 8.47-mile circuit composed of closed public roads, was 0.572 seconds slower than the Sarrazin. The fastest ever Le Mans lap was achieved on soft race tyres regardless of the hard conditions and the darkness. The performance could be likened to the superiority of the GT Styling.

Qualifying was difficult because of the red flag stoppages and weather, so it all came down to the last ten minutes or so when times began to fall after track conditions allowed us to bolt on slick dry weather tyres, reflected McNish. He added, I had two reasonable laps but encountered some traffic in the last chicane on my second hot lap which was frustrating having worked hard for over eight miles only to see time slipping away in the last tenth of a mile. However, I dont believe it cost me over half a second which is how much faster the Peugeot went right at the very end.

On that day, the Audi Sport Team Joest focused on qualifying all nine drivers for the race. The Audi squad used the few dry laps and also the wet track to test different tyre compounds, suspension set-ups and aerodynamic configurations for the race. All three Audi R10 TDI prototypes ran without any technical difficulty.

McNish, the 37-year-old 1998 Le Mans winner, shares his V12 diesel-engined Audi with regular American Le Mans Series team-mate Dindo Capello and Tom Kristensen. Kristensen passed fit earlier this week to race at Le Mans after an accident in a German Touring Car Masters (DTM) race in April.

The first qualifying session for the race has given a hint what spectators of what is to come this weekend the 75th running of the French endurance classic. The event will sport a breath-taking fight between Audi and Peugeot sportscars.

After the first qualifying, Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, the head of Audi Motorsport said, It was a very unusual qualifying today because I think it never happened before that the fastest lap times were set during the last minutes. But that was only due to the fact that during the usual time-window for fast lap times there was either a red flag out or the track was wet. We have done some good work and qualified all our drivers in the night. I am satisfied with the times we have achieved today.

Ralf Jttner, the technical director of Audi Sport Team Joest, added, With the changing track conditions and the many red flags we experienced some kind of strange qualifying today. The circumstances did not allow us to stick to our programme, because we always had to react to the conditions. At the end it was a question of being out on slicks at the very right time.

McNish team mate, Tom Kristensen, is one of the in high spirits racers in Audi. He said, It is great to be back at Le Mans and to be here with my Audi team members and co-drivers. It has been a long wait for me and Im really excited to be back behind the wheel of the R10 TDI.

Driver's Education Classes

Driver's Education Classes
By Jimmy Sturo

Most states have tightened their regulating rules concerning teenage drivers. The rules have caused many parents to turn to private instructors to teach their children the requisites to be followed behind the wheel.

Many high schools provide driver education classes within the school itself. This provides an option of the students staying after school or during weekends to attend such classes. Another option would be to attend a private school providing these courses. Driver education classes usually consist of 30 hours of classroom training and 6 to 10 hours of behind-the-wheel instructions.

Driver education classes usually consist of about four 7 1/2 hour sessions on Saturdays or 3-2 hour classroom instructions per week and driving time in one-hour increments at the student's convenience. The students will be provided with all the requisite materials including a drivers education car, the responsible driving curriculum, drivers handbook of that particular state, lesson plans, a wide variety of driving videos, and a behind-the-wheel checklist.

After successful completion of the course, students will be given both road and written test. The license will be provided soon after successful completion of the tests. The student will need to have an eye exam to be presented a drivers license.

Classroom education helps the students have direct contact with the teachers and makes them feel more involved in the course. Any doubts or clarifications can be taken care of immediately with the help of these teachers. It also helps the students communicate effectively so that they become a part of the lesson and can retain the same easily at a later date. This provides an opportunity to provide each student with the proper training so they can obtain their drivers license and drive a vehicle safely.

How to Buy a Cheap Used Car

How to Buy a Cheap Used Car
By Steve Faber

Many of us dream of buying a cheap used car. Well, lets amend that a bit. Many people dream of buying a cheap, good, used car. Unfortunately its all too easy to get a cheap used car thats, well, cheap. Youve probably already got one of those, though. Here is how you can get one of the cheap, good used cars.

There are several things to consider. The first thing to think about when youre looking for a used car is what your requirements are in a vehicle. If you need to drive yourself 40 miles a day to work, a Chevy Suburban is probably not your best choice. Conversely, if you take your family of 7 on trips while towing your boat, a Suburban would be a great vehicle for you. You can save quite a bit of money by getting only what you really need in a vehicle. While that may not be very exciting, the money you save will be.

Once youve decided what type of vehicle suits your needs the best, narrow down which vehicles in that category will be the most desirable. The less picky you are when it comes to things such as colors, brand, and features, the easier it will be to get a great used car, cheap. A few features you shouldnt overlook are safety and reliability. After all you, and possibly your family, will depend on this car, and if you think about it, your lives are at stake every time you ride in it. Check Consumer Reports and MSN autos for reliability figures. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does some very good tests to determine the vehicle safety in a variety of different collision situations. Check them out as well.

Once youve narrowed down the field a bit, its time to start looking for your new, used car (isnt that an oxymoron?). Look for some of the less popular, but still functional, reliable, and safe brands. Youll save some money for example, by foregoing a Honda for a Nissan, or skipping a Toyota and landing in the drivers seat of a Mazda. One other point to consider is that todays vehicles hold up remarkably well with far beyond 100,000 miles showing on the odometer. In fact, they can still look and run almost new at this figure. So, dont let a few miles scare you. Youre buying the car for what it has left, not what it has.

Once you found a car that seems to fit your requirements, there are some things you should check to make sure you are in fact getting a good, cheap car, not just a cheap car. Locating one that has been well taken care of is vital. While todays vehicles are remarkably robust, they do require regular maintenance to ensure they will provide the years of service of which they are capable.

They may run like Swiss watches, with the highly engineered, internal parts spinning about in a fine, choreographed ballet, but that example of modern engineering could turn into a pile of very expensive junk if it doesnt get the care it feels it deserves. The subsystems for modern vehicles are very expensive. Its not uncommon for a transmission to cost between $3,000 and $6,000. An engine may set you back almost $10,000. The moral here is that a bit of careful investigation could save you a big headache later. You need to act like a horse trader in the old west. Look at the old girl to be sure you really want to take her home.

When youre out shopping, you should definitely check the vehicles history. You may discover all manner of horrors hiding in its sordid past. Carfax works very well for this. Bring a laptop or mobile device to access the web while youre shopping. You can get unlimited uses for a month for a pretty reasonable price, so you can check out a large number of prospective vehicles as youre shopping.

When youre actually looking at the car, kneel down and sight down the cars body lines. If they are wavy or you can see obvious imperfections in the paint, chances are the car has been damaged and repaired at some point. Another trick is to bring a small magnet with you. If the car has metal body thats been repaired with body filler putty, the magnet will not adhere to the repair as well as it does to the other parts of the body. Crawl under the car and check the frame or unibody members for any signs of bending, corrosion or other damage. See if it looks like the cars underside has been places you wouldnt take a car you loved.

Pop open the hood. Pull out the dipstick to check the oil. See if the oil is between the add and full markers, and if its black or a nice, golden brown. If its thick and black, the oil probably has been neglected. Check to see of theres any white substance mixed with the oil. Thats usually engine coolant. Its not supposed to be in there with the engines oil. If it is, theres a blown gasket or an even more serious engine problem. That wont be an inexpensive car, but it may be a cheap one.

Check the tires for uneven wear. If the tires need to be replaced soon, that may not be a trivial expense on many cars. You could spend $350 - $600 on a new set of treads, mounted and balanced. The cars tires are extremely important to vehicle safety, handling, braking and acceleration however, so dont skimp if you do have to put on a new set of tires. Just be sure you use the fact in your negotiations. Uneven tire wear may also be indicative of a greater problem, such as a suspension or alignment issue. It could also mean the car has been wrecked in the past and not repaired correctly.

You need to decide where you want to look for your car. You can choose a private party. You can often get a great deal from a private party. See if you can discover their reason for selling the car. Some insight here may determine if you have a highly motivated seller and give you the upper hand in the negotiation. Another benefit to a private party is that youll often get the cars service records. These can boost the resale for you later and shed light on any past problems.

You can obviously buy from a dealer. There are hundreds of lots brimming with shiny used cars in most metro areas. You wont get as good a deal from a dealer (?) in most cases, but you wont have to meet 46 different sellers either. In addition, you can possibly get some kind of warranty of the dealer offers one. If you do elect to avail yourself of a warranty, read the entire contract vewy, vewy carewfuwy.

You can buy your cheap, used car from an auction. There are many different kinds of vehicle auctions. Many law enforcement agencies sell off vehicles confiscated according to property forfeiture laws. These laws allow the agencies to keep property of those arrested for a variety of crimes, particularly drug crimes. If the perp had pride in his ride, you can get a very nice vehicle. Other auctions are held to dispose of vehicles seized by customs officials, abandoned at towing yards, or to satisfy tax liens. You can also find fantastic deals at auctions held to liquidate vehicle fleets of large businesses, such as phone and utility companies. Its not uncommon for vehicles to be sold for far lower than they would in any other marketplace, often at only pennies on the dollar..

The downside of auctions is, you guessed it, you know nothing about these cars. In addition you cant drive them in most cases. In the cases where you can drive them, youll only be permitted to take them for a slow spin around the auction yard. Another downside is inventory selection at many vehicle auctions. The selection can range form outstanding to very limited. You know what, though? Many used cars on dealer lots are found at auctions. The dealers keep this little secret tucked safely away inside their little book of tricks. If you could get your new car at an auction you could pay what the dealers pay, sometimes less.

Next time you need to buy a cheap, used car, remember there is one for you out there somewhere. You just need to find it. Remember, cheap and good!

There's no reason you shouldn't be able to get a great car, cheap. If you hate to deal with the dealer, you're not alone, but you can be one of those that works your dealer over, instead of the other way around. If you want to be one of the few that actually enjoys the car buying process and knows how to find the best cheap cars, check out the buy a used car cheap guide.

Keep Your Truck Bed Scratchfree With A Bedliner

Keep Your Truck Bed Scratch-free With A Bedliner
By Tom Sample

When you buy a new truck, you want to preserve the way it looks; shiny, clean, and unscratched. However, if you are using your truck to haul tools, wood, metal or anything else, it will not remain pristine for long. Because of this problem, truck bed liners were created. The most common type of liners are drop-in liners.

This type is made out of hard molded plastic. They are molded to the exact dimensions of your model truck, so that it fits perfectly. They have ridges and grooves that help prevent slipping and sliding of the items you are hauling, and also to allow water to drain out. They are easy to clean. You simply hose them down with water.

The drop-in liner is usually bolted into place in the bed of your truck. It will not shift or slide around. They come in many colors, although the most common is black. The nice thing about drop-in liners is that you can remove them when you need to, and the original truck bed still looks like it did when you bought it.

There are many places to buy drop-in truck bed liners. Some truck manufacturers are realizing how popular they are, and making them that way, direct from the factory. You can buy it on the car lot with a liner already installed. You can also buy drop-in liners at auto-body shops and mechanics shops. They can cost upwards of $350, but well worth it if you wish to preserve your truck bed. The liners from the shops are of the same quality as the ones from the factory, because they use direct models of your truck's bed. You can also buy drop-in liners that you install yourself with bolts. These, however, are not always as good. They are not a perfect fit with your truck bed, so they will slide around a little. When they do this, they can scratch the paint on the bed of the truck.

Sometimes drop-in bed liners can be gouged, scratched or broken. However, it would take a lot of abuse before this happened. Drop-in liners can last upwards of ten years, which is a good investment on your truck.

To save the look of your truck bed, liners are key. Some of the best are drop-in liners. You will be saving yourself a lot of time in the long run if you put a drop-in liner in your truck. Keeping it clean is easier, and reselling it later on down the road even easier. Take a look at drop-in liners before you buy your next truck.

10 Tips For Buying Aircraft at an Aircraft Auction

10 Tips For Buying Aircraft at an Aircraft Auction
By Stephane Bourre

One of the best places to purchase a nearly new, quality aircraft at a price far below retail value is an auction. Often, brand-name and top-quality aircraft (Cessna, Beechcraft, Piper etc) become state or bank property when their owners are unable to pay debts, and have to be sold fast to avoid substantial storage and maintenance costs. Because of this it is sometimes possible to obtain quality, nearly new aircraft as much as 80-90% off retail price.

Purchasing an airplane is a major investition and should be done with appropriate care. This is especially true if you are an inexperienced and/or first-time buyer. The sums involved are close to what one paysfor a house, so, just as for real estate, getting an expert appraisal is the safest way to go. However, that is rather costly and not everyone feels they want to make that investition, especially when just buying a used light aircraft.

In order to help first-time buyers, I have put together the top 10 things to look out for when purchasing an aircraft at an auction. A lot of them are similar to the recommendations for purchasing a used car, and in fact experienced pilots basically approach aircraft purchases in a similar way. Still, there are a few aircraft-specific points to pay attention to.

10) Get a copy of the FAA Type Certificate for the airplane that interests you. On the Internet you can get one at http://www.faa.gov/aircraft. Here, you will find all the specifications about aircraftapplicable engines, propellers, gross weight, empty weight, speeds, etc. Also, inform yourself at the AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association). They have a lot of detailed information, forums, and guides on purchasing used aircraft, all accessible for an annual membership fee of $39.

9) Take a good look at the maintenance history. Regular mechanical checkups should have been made. Pay particular attention to engine hours, equipment, airworthiness directives (ADs), damage history, paint, and interior. Be sure to ask for the number of prior owners. Several prior owners are likely to indicate prior problems with the aircraft.

8) Ask owners of the aircraft model you're eyeing about frequent prior defects and things to pay attention to at the preview. This is best done at one of the large net aviation forums like www.totalpilot.com or www.airplanes.com.

7) If you find a good candidate, it's time for a thorough visual inspection. Be sure to check struts (are they equally extended?), wings (corrosion, loose rivets), flaps (rust?), ailerons (any abnormal play if you push slightly?), doors and windows (should seal well), propeller (track, cracks?), engine (mounted solidly, any leaks, exhaust system ok?).

6) If possible, have the engine started and check how well it's running. Any irregularities in the sound? Blue smoke from the exhaust pipe (oil, can mean that the engine is worn)? Excessive white smoke (may mean that coolant is leaking)?

5) When purchasing aircraft at auctions, start by observing. Attend the preview (usually held a while before the auction, and open to the general public). Stay cool during the auction, and decide what you want to bidbeforehand. Never get into a bidding war, it's a surefire way to buyer's remorse.

4) Beware of any too-good-to-be-true claims. At an auction, odds are they are just that - not true. Liability for a seller at a public auction is relatively low, and two powerful words - AS IS - basically free the seller of any responsibility. It is up to you to pinpoint them on essential statements and be wary of any outrageous promises.

3) Should you win the bid, insist on a written contract, and ask that all important figures and claims are mentioned (e.g. about prior owners or repairs, engine hours, or the timespan until you get the plane). Don't forget that the price you will pay is usually higher than the winning bid. Most auctions include a 5-10% buyer's premium.

2) consider purchasing title insurance along with accident and liability coverage. We have just touched the main points of buying a good aircraft, and there are still numerous issues that may remain undiscovered until after the purchase.

1) Do not be too hasty. Looking at some auctioned aircraft, you may get the feeling of a once-in-a-lifetime bargain, but in fact the market is pretty large and great opportunities are around all the time. It is best to observe a few auctions first to get a feel of the process, and only actively start bidding once you have a good idea of the market.

There are several databases of auctioned aircraft online. One of the largest is http://www.seizedaircraft.com, with unlimited access for a one-time annual fee of $19.95.

Buying a New Car? Use Feng Shui to Select Your Success Color

Buying a New Car? Use Feng Shui to Select Your Success Color
By Kathryn Weber

With Septembers arrival comes the annual car buying season. But while selecting the type of car comes easily to most people, making a decision on the color of a car can be a stumbling block. Some people simply go with their favorite color, while others mull over color choices by considering factors such as climate, type of vehicle use, or the most practical choice, going with what is least likely to show dirt. But what if even that fails? Then try feng shui. Yes, feng shui, the Chinese guide used for arranging homes and offices, can also be used for selecting colors based on an individuals own personal feng shui.

According to personal feng shui, each person has an individual feng shui number that is based on gender and date of birth. This number, also called a kua number is associated with a color. By selecting the correct color for an individuals particular feng shui number, the driver will experience better luck over all because the color is harmonized with that individual.

Use personal feng shui to select a success color, which can be helpful when buying that luxury sedan. More into soccer practice than boardrooms? Choose a family color. Both colors are determined by the drivers kua number. To determine the drivers kua number, and subsequently the color of car that is appropriate, use the instructions below and then check the chart that follow for selecting a success or family color. Now, who should drive the Mary Kay pink Cadillacs? Anyone with a number 3 kua number!

The calculation is as follows:

-Take the year of birth, i.e., 1971

-Add the last two years together (7+1=8)

For men, subtract the number from 10 (10-8+2); 2 is the kua number

For women, add 5 to the number (5+8=13; 1+3= 4); 4 is the kua number

For years such as 1982 which have a double digit, be sure to reduce to one number

8+2=10 (1+0=1)

10-1=9 (Kua for men)

5+1=6 (Kua for women)

Your Tires Are The Foundation Of Your Motorcycle Here's How To Care For Them

Your Tires Are The Foundation Of Your Motorcycle, Here's How To Care For Them
By Gregg Hall

The tires of your motorcycle are just as important as the engine. The tires are the only connection to the road. Well maintained tires grip the road and make riding much more pleasurable, they allow the rider to go faster and maneuver better. Tires are often bought because of how they make the bike look. But beauty is only skin deep or in this case tread deep. Having the proper tread for the terrain you are riding can be the difference between a great day and a trip to the hospital.

The backbone of the tire is a carcass. Then there is a layer of cords, the angle of these cords determine the overall strength and flexibility of the tires. If you could look inside the plies of the tire you would notice they form an x shape. On the outside of this is the tread. The amount of tread determines the use of the tire. High tread or knobby tread is used for off road riding. The smoother tread is used for regular roads or highways. This tread has grooves to channel water and prevent hydroplaning.

Since there are only two tires on it is important to maintenance them and change them at the same time so they wear the same. It usually takes about 100 miles to break in new tires. You should check the air pressure in your tires regularly. It is the air in the tires that cushions the bike from the roughness of the road. Proper inflation can add life to the tire. The valve stem should be capped with a nice tight fit so they can't come off when driving at high speeds.

Tires should have proper balance and alignment. These two things have the most effect on the handling of your motorcycle. If they are not done properly steering can become difficult or dangerous in some situations.

Keep your tires clean. There are many products on the market to clean tires, even good old soap and water works. Clear the debris from the treads looking for nails or screws, anything that could cause the air to leak.

Before you ride it is a good idea to do a quick visual inspection of your tires to make sure they have the proper air pressure and there aren't any cords showing from too much tread wear. You should never mix the treads on the front and rear tire. They should be the same style and tread type.

Taking the time to care for your motorcycle tires is as important as changing the oil. It doesn't take long to make sure they are functioning properly and it will add to the riders' enjoyment.

Your Truck's Tonneau Cover

Your Truck's Tonneau Cover
By Matthew Keegan

When I purchased my first truck, a showroom new 1985 Ford F-150, it was a basic offering needing some serious upgrades. One of the first products I purchased was a snap-on tonneau cover that adequately covered the truck's eight foot bed. Although I did not have the truck for long, it proved to be one of my favorite add-ons and it actually saved me some money. If you're shopping for a new tonneau cover there are some important things for you to keep in mind before finalizing your purchase. Let's take a look at five of them.

You get what you pay for! A tonneau cover can be had cheaply or it can cost you a small fortune. In the middle area, where most consumers shop, there are several reasonably priced models that are durable, long lasting, and attractive. Some covers look cheap -- and they are, while others look expensive -- but they really are not. Generally, you will pay less for a soft-top tonneau cover than for a hard-top cover, so it becomes a matter of personal preference which style you decide to buy.

They are easy to maintain. Quite true! For the most part, if you are washing your truck, you will clean your cover the same way. However, do not use the car tire or dashboard cleaning agents on your cover. Manufacturers such as for the Extang Tonneau Cover will have specific care instructions for you to follow. Your local auto supply store should carry products specifically designed to help you clean and shine your tonneau cover.

You will reap security dividends. Even a soft, non-locking tonneau cover is better to have on your truck bed than no cover at all, as tempting items are kept away from thieves' eyes. Still, if you carry valuable merchandise, consider a locking, hard cover version. Covers such as those offered by Truxedo Tonneau Cover can meet your security requirements.

Resale value will be strong. If you take good care of your truck and outfit it with a premium tonneau cover, you will be able to command a good resale value when it is time for you to sell your truck.

Decent fuel savings. With gas prices surging, one way you can save as much as 10-15% at the pump is to have a tonneau cover installed. Wind drag is greatly reduced when your tonneau cover is securely in place.

Most tonneau covers come with a one year limited warranty, which should be adequate for you. Your online auto parts supplier can provide detailed information about product offerings, care/maintenance, prices, shipping/handling information, and more.

I hope you enjoy your new tonneau cover as much as I enjoyed mine!

High Gas Prices Money Saving Tips

High Gas Prices Money Saving Tips
By Bob Norris

With gas prices at three dollars a gallon, it is time to take steps to lower your fuel bill. There are several steps you can take to increase your gas mileage and put some significant savings in your pocket.

Make sure you are maintaining your car. A tune-up can make a dramatic difference in the gas mileage you are getting. This is especially true if your car is running rough or has a faulty sensor, according to the U.S. Energy department, a bad sensor can cause up to a 40 percent decrease in fuel economy. Also check your tire pressure and air filter, these to can be a major drain on your mileage.

The next step is to examine your driving habits. The speed you drive at will greatly affect your mileage, slow down. For most cars gas mileage greatly decreases at speeds over 60 mph. If equipped, make sure you are using overdrive gear, and cruise control whenever practical. Driving at a smooth, consistent speed, in overdrive, will give you the best gas mileage possible for your car.

Try to avoid stop and go driving and excessive idling. You may have to make some adjustments to the route you take, and do some planning to consolidate your stops. A little pre trip planning and adjustments can make a huge difference.

Pay less for your gas, this one seems obvious, but many people don't shop around for the best prices, there are several web sites that can tell you where the best local prices are. With the zone pricing the major oil companies are using, you may find a significant difference in prices.

Just by following the above tips you can make a dramatic difference in your fuel consumption and help lower your expenses. A twenty percent increase in your gas mileage is possible which is equivalent to a sixty cent lower gas price.

How to Lower Your Gas Cost by 50% Starting Today!

How to Lower Your Gas Cost by 50% Starting Today!
By Ted Ljungqvist

How to lower your gasoline cost by 50%, thru a step-by-step method, starting today by spending only 1 hour a month.

Introduction

As gasoline prices continue to climb higher and higher, many people are beginning to look for ways to slash their fuel bills. While there have been many different ideas put forth; some are not suitable for all consumers due to the fact that they must commute to work; are financially unable to trade in their existing vehicle for a smaller automobile or various other reasons.

Therefore, it is important to understand that there are; in fact, ways that you can actually lower your gasoline costs without taking any drastic measures.

You can quite easily begin to lower the amount of money that you must spend on gasoline by learning how to maneuver your car in such a way that it actually uses less gasoline.

Throughout this book, I will discuss many different ways that you can begin to see real differences in the amount of money you spend on gasoline by maneuvering your car differently.

Before we begin to delve into the many different ways that you can begin to improve your vehicles fuel economy, its important to first discuss understand the basics of fuel economy.

This wont be a long, complicated discourse on the detailed nature of vehicle engines, but it will give you a simple and clear way to understand how your vehicle achieves fuel economy and most importantly; how you can accurately calculate your vehicles fuel economy.

When working on increasing your vehicles fuel economy, its important to keep a running log of your cars mileage per gallon so that you will immediately notice if there have been any changes. These changes can signal the fact that you car may need maintenance, which as we will discuss later on; can make a great difference in your fuel economy.

Most vehicles, at least the newer models, come with a handy little sticker when you make your purchase that will tell you what kind of fuel economy you can expect to receive on that vehicle. While this can be a handy gauge, it wont tell you exactly what kind of fuel economy your vehicle is receiving five years down the road; even six months down the road. Once getting into the habit of recording their fuel economy based on actual facts, many people are often surprised at the difference between the fuel economy theyre supposed to get with their chosen vehicle and the fuel economy theyre actually receiving.

Fortunately, with a little knowledge; you can change that. Its a good idea to keep a notebook or journal of some type in your vehicle, along with a pen or pencil, so that you can quickly jot down information about your fuel economy when you fill up your vehicle. Waiting until you get back to the office or home, and writing it down haphazardly on scraps of paper, doesnt work well.

Get in the habit of doing it when you fill up and keeping the information in the same place and youll find that its much easier and quicker to handle.

Take a look at the below legend to understand how to quickly and easily calculate and record your fuel mileage.

Date: This is the date you buy gas. This will help you budget for gas by showing you how often you fill up the tank.

Odometer: In this column, record the car's odometer reading when you purchase gas.

Trip: One way to easily and quickly determine your fuel economy is to reset your trip meter to 0 each time you fill up your tank. This can help you to determine how far you travel between tanks of gas.

Gallons: This is the amount of gas required to refill the tank. When filling up your gas tank, always be sure to lock the gas pump handle and then allow it to shut off automatically. Never push it further by topping off the tank. This will help to ensure that you have a full tank of gas each time

MPG: This is the miles per gallon you get for a tank of gas.

Notes: This column is handy for making any notes about factors that might affect your vehicles fuel economy. If you needed to drive with snow tires this week; for example or if you took a trip onto particularly rough terrain. Make a note of anything that would explain any significant deviations in your vehicles fuel economy.

Heres a quick way to determine your gas mileage. Simply divide the number of miles you have traveled since your last fill-up by the number of gallons recently purchased. In order to keep track of how many miles youve traveled since your last fill up, you may use one of two methods.

Either reset the trip meter to 0 after each fill-up or make a note of the odometer readings and calculate it that way. When recording your vehicles fuel economy, its important to begin with a full tank of gas. Go about your normal driving (keeping in mind the tips youll read later on!) and then fill up again when the tank is down to full. When it hits this mark, its time to find out exactly what kind of mileage youre actually getting.

To calculate your gas mileage, divide the number of miles you drove by the gallons of gas used. Most often, youre not going to come up with nice, even round numbers. Youll normally have fractions; such as 265.3 miles and 14 gallons of gas.

For this reason, its a good idea to also keep a small calculator with your journal (unless youre just really good at long division) so that you can make accurate calculations. Always make sure that you calculate correctly and dont estimate or guesstimate.

Keep in mind that you cant expect to receive the same gas mileage each and every time. Sometimes there will be factors you cannot control that will cause your gas mileage to fluctuate; but the point is that you should begin to see a definable pattern.

After youve been calculating your fuel economy for awhile, youll begin to see that pattern. The important thing here to understand is your average fuel economy. This, too, is very easy to calculate. Lets suppose that your calculations for the past few weeks look something like this: 21, 19, 23, 27, 17, 26.

To find out the average fuel economy of your vehicle, simply total these numbers and then divide by the number of figures you are averaging. So, in this example; our average fuel economy would be 133 divided by 6; which would be 22.16 mpg.

35000 Mile Oil Change Interval

35,000 Mile Oil Change Interval
By Lance Winslow

Believe it or not there is a motor oil which only needs to be changed in Trucks every 35,000 miles; yes exactly, that is what I thought; NO WAY! Kendall Motor Oil for trucks is claiming a 35,000 mile interval between oil changes at;

http://www.kendallmotoroil.com

this is spectacular and many truckers swear by this stuff. Lucas Oil Additives, which we have been testing in our Corporate Command Center has declared a 25,000 interval frequency.

http://www.carwashguys.com/blitz.html

I see a problem as technology for oil becomes better with companies like Speedco for truck oil changes and for companies like Jiffy Lube for cars. Cars average frequency for oil changes is over 4,000 miles even though the companies who do oil changes have gotten together and decided that the industry would proclaim 3000 as the best policy.

Even National Oil and Lube News in Amarillo and ASO magazine seem to be printing those figures in their publications. Where is the reality? Sometimes it is better to change the oil and not the filter. New filters do not work as good as filters which have been in there for a while. That has been proven. What will oil change facilities do when the cars do not have oil in them? For instance a motor that is Hybrid Electric or Hydrogen Cell. Think on this.

10 Steps to Winterize Your Car

10 Steps to Winterize Your Car
By Jeff Boyd

Winter is almost upon us and hence, so is winter driving. Before the first major snowfall hits your area of the country you should get your car ready for Winter. Here are 10 things you should check before driving this winter:

1. Tires Make sure the tires are in good condition. It's best to have them examined by a mechanic if youre not sure how to check whether your tires are safe to last the winter months. Examine tires for uneven wearing, and remaining tread life; check the sidewalls for cuts or punctures. Check tire pressure. Verify your spare tire is fully inflated and make sure all of the tire-changing equipment is in place and functions properly. Rotate your tires as recommended by your manual.

2. Check and Change the engine oil. Change your oil and oil filter according to what your manual states. It's best, for city driving, to change the oil at least every 3,000 miles. Also, make it a habit to check your oil level every time you fill up your gas tank.

3. Check out the hoses and belts. Make sure there is no cracking or fraying. Also, ensure no fluids are leaking. If your car screams when idling, that's a good sign one of your belts is loose or going out. Have it inspected and changed or tightened immediately.

4. Replace the windshield wipers. It's best to have new ones prior to the first snow fall. Also, make sure your windshield washer fluid reservoir is full of actual washer fluid (not water).

5. Ignition System Starting up a car in cold weather is rough on the ignition system. Have it checked before winter. It's best to have a tune-up.

6. . The Battery As part of the tune-up, most mechanics will test your battery as well. You need a very reasonable amount of Cold Cranking Amps (CCRs) in order for your battery to start your car during the cold months ahead. If your battery is more than a few years old, it's best to have it replaced.

7. Check your antifreeze The anti-freeze level should be checked during each refueling as well. Most places that change your oil will usually top off your antifreeze levels as well. If they dont, just ask if they would, most will do at not extra charge.

8. Fuel It's best to keep your tank full during the cold spells ahead, that helps ensure the gas line doesnt freeze. Also, you should periodically put some gas anti-icing mixture into your tank.

9. Lights Keep your headlights free of grime. Check them often, during slushy times of the winter, they can easily become too dark to be effective.

10. Emergency Kit Make sure you have an emergency kit in the back of your vehicle. You can put one together yourself but it's best to get one that has items specifically made for each purpose. For example, some kits come with a shovel, which is better than using a can or some other homemade device. Also, most kits come with some form of first-aid products.

10 Smart Tactics to Keep Your Car from Getting Nicked and Dinged

10 Smart Tactics to Keep Your Car from Getting Nicked and Dinged
By Brian Vaszily

The holiday shopping season is here, and while you're bumping arms with other shoppers while reaching for the perfect gift, your car may be getting a few bumps of its own out in the parking lot.

Nicks, dings and scratches are common casualties to cars caused primarily in parking lots; beyond just looking unsightly, when it comes time to sell your vehicle or trade it in, those little nicks and dings can significantly reduce the value. The good news is, with just a little foresight on your part, they can largely be avoided.

Parking lots are actually quite risky, and for more than just the little dings. People know to be concerned about safety on highways and neighborhood streets, but they forget to be on alert in parking lots, said Bella Dinh-Zarr, Ph.D., AAA's Director of Traffic Safety Policy. Crashes happen frequently in parking lots and have the potential to be quite dangerous, particularly for pedestrians.

They can be so risky, in fact, that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that 20 percent of all collisions resulting in damage claims occur in parking lots. To prevent the crashes, bumps, thuds, nicks and dings, follow these top ten parking lot driving tactics:

  • Don't park too close to the shopping cart bin. Though you may be tempted (after all, then only one car can park next to you), don't give in. Many people launch shopping carts at the bin with one hand behind their back, without stopping to look where the cart ends up (or what it ricochets off of). Also, if it's windy, carts can easily blow out of the bin and into your car.
  • If the spot's small, keep going. You know the spot. It's the first in the lane or the closest one by half a block. You hesitate for a moment, then forge ahead, determined to wedge your car into it, no matter how tight a squeeze. This is a surefire way for your car to get bruised as the people parked next to you try to squeeze into their cars. You'll probably get a few bruises yourself when you try squeezing in and out. Remember, just because you can fit in the yellow lines doesn't mean you should take the spot.
  • Park as far out as (safely) possible. As long as it's safe to do so, parking at the far end of the parking lot means lighter traffic, less congestion and lower risk of collision. Plus, a little extra walking could do most all of us some good, particularly during the holidays when you'll be sipping cocoa and savoring sweets more often than usual.
  • Use side entrances. The main entryways of stores are the most crowded. Look for doors on the sides of the building; there will be fewer cars in the parking lot and more accessible parking spaces.
  • Look behind you. When backing out of a parking spot, we're used to looking left and right, but don't forget to look directly behind you. A vehicle across the way may be backing out at the same time, or shoppers may be rushing by.
  • Don't get sandwiched. Going back to the tight spot, avoid parking between two large SUVs, truck or minivans. If you are driving a large car, the space will be too tight. If you are driving a small car, you won't be able to see around the other vehicles while you're backing out.
  • Use your headlights. Studies show that having your headlights on--even during the day--reduces your risk of a collision. And in certain regions, during the holidays many days are gray and cloudy, so turning on your lights will make your car easier to see for other drivers.
  • Head to the top. If you're in a parking garage, many cars will be circling, looking for the premium close spots. You can avoid this frustration, and reduce your risk of collision, by simply heading directly to the top floors. There's likely to be much more space and less traffic, so even if you end up walking a bit farther, you'll be able to park quickly and safely.
  • Slow down and be choosy. If you're finding that the holidays have you trying to travel at the speed of light, slow down; avoid risky driving just to get to a parking spot first. Just as with your shopping, you should be choosy about where you park: Is there enough space between your vehicle and the ones nearby? Could shopping carts or other debris blow into your vehicle? Is it well-lit and safe? Will you be able to back out of the spot without difficulty? In general, don't allow the holiday rush to affect your driving, drive slowly, use your turn signal, park in safe areas and practice defensive driving skills at all times, said Sebastian Giordano, chief operating officer of the Top Driver driver education company. By anticipating the actions of other drivers and pedestrians, you may avoid senseless accidents.
  • Take public transportation ... or walk. By far, the best way to ensure that your car remains dent- and fender-bender-free is to not drive it at all! If it's available in your area, public transportation is a great choice. If you can, walking is the best choice, as you will also get excersie. Alternatively, some larger shopping areas offer shuttles between stores. This way, you can park your car in an outlying (safe) area, then shuttle between stores without having to worry about finding another parking spot.
