When it comes to motorcycles, the top known brand is Harley Davidson. Harleys are distinctive in design and attract a loyal following. Bikers who are not fans contend that the bikes are badly engineered, under-powered and under-performing. But in reality Harleys are designed for long, low-speed cruising on flat, straight roads. And Harley is a name that smacks of prestige and success and tradition and longevity and power. And sound! There's the unique sound of a Harley that speaks volumes about the name.

The Harley-Davidson Motor Company was officially founded on August 28, 1903 by, strangely enough, two guys named Harley and Davidson (plus Davidson's two brothers). Production started in Milwaukee, where it in fact continues today. Incidentally, a few years ago Harley celebrated their 100th anniversary, quite an accomplishment. And nowhere was the celebration bigger than in hometown Milwaukee, where thousands of motorists congregated for the celebration over Labor Day weekend.

Harley grew by leaps and bounds. They were the motorcycles of choice for police forces in the US and abroad. Harleys were used extensively in combat in World War I. By 1920, Harley-Davidson was officially the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. And they were only one of two American cycle manufacturers to survive the Great Depression in 1929.

In the 70s, the Japanese had developed motorcycles that were far superior to the Harleys. As a result, Harley-Davidson very nearly declared bankruptcy. However, Harleys improved their quality and craftsmanship, exploited the etro appeal of the machines, and eventually turned themselves around to being once again among the leaders in motorcycle mania everywhere,

Well, not exactly. Porsche isnt one of the oldest automakers in the world but they have certainly become on of the most prestigious and they have been for quite some time. So when did the company begin?

Some would say that the story begins when Max Hoffman started importing the Porsche to the United States, of course that would be an American point of view. I say the story of Porsche begins with the birth of its founder, Ferdinand Porsche who was born to a tinsmith in the village of Haffersdorf, Germany in 1875.

Ferdinand showed his genius at an early age, wiring his familys home for electricity at the age of eighteen. He hadnt yet displayed the incredibly disciplined engineering skills that he would eventually found a company on. Sometimes you will see the term Doctor added to his name, although his only formal education in technical engineering was as a part time student in Vienna, Austria.

Seven years later, at 25, he had begun designing automobiles with his first design accepted by a company in Vienna by the name of Lohner & Co. For the next two decades Ferdinand was an engineer with all of the big players of the day in the German automotive industry and was responsible for designing at least a dozen of the most important vehicles in automotive history, at least from a technical standpoint.

While working for the renowned Mercedes Benz, he was a developer of the most popular Mercedes models in history, the SSK. His temperamental attitude got him in trouble with the higher ups in Mercedes and he was released for not agreeing with their philosophies on engineering. He went out on his own and began a company he called Porsche A.G., which was engineering and consulting firm based in Stuttgart. One of his key employees was his young son, Ferry who was highly interested in racing cars and sports.

While working for the forerunner of Audi, then known as Auto Union, they developed the Front, which was the first front wheel drive car. Then they dazzled the company and the rest of the automotive world with their mid-engine Grand Prix racers and super charged V-12 and V-16 motors that won the majority of racing titles in Europe along with Mercedes for almost ten years.

Many people dont realize that is was Ferdinand Porsche who engineered the design that would become the VW Beetle. He had created prototypes for NSU and Zundapp but became dissatisfied with their not moving on to build the designs so he allowed the German government to buy the plans. Afterwards, he directed the building of a factory to build the vehicle he called the Type 60, which became the Beetle.

It was after WWII that Porsche began making vehicles that carried his nameplate and made him a household name all over the world.

In the news: Skoda, Volkswagen subsidiary and recipient of VW exhaust part will once again try its luck in the Australian market after 25 years. Volkswagen plans to introduce its Skoda brand in Australia this coming October. Matthew Weisner, Volkswagen Group of Australia general manager, press and public relations have been appointed as head of Skoda Australia and his duty includes the re-launch of the Skoda brand. Although a bit reluctant Weisner said that he will do his best to promote Skoda to the Australian market.

Skodas lineup for Australia includes the following:

Fabia this Volkswagen Polo-sized light car derived its styling cues from the Mini Cooper and Suzuki Swift. The Fabia was launched last year at the Paris Motor Show. It offers economical, three-cylinder, HTP short for High Tech Performance petrol and TDI engines. It also offers 16-valve, 63kW, 1.4 liter and 77kW, 1.6 liter petrol models. The 1.6 liter petrol engine is offered with a six-speed tiptronic automatic. Both the 1.4 and 1.6 petrol units are to be brought to Australia.

The Fabia has a length measuring at 3992 mm long and with a wheelbase of 2462 mm. Comparing it to the Polo, the Fabia is approximately 76 mm longer overall and 3mm longer on the wheelbase. It also possesses 300 liters of luggage space. The Fabia that will be sold in Australia will also feature six airbags, climate control airconditioning and active headlights. The Fabia will be priced at $16,000.

Octavia the Octavia bears similar features with the VW Passat and just like the latter, the Octaivia is a mid-size offered either as a front-wheel-drive sedan and wagon. It will also be made to compete with the premium priced Japanese models with the likes of Honda Accord Euro, Mazda6, Subaru Liberty, and soon-to-be Ford Mondeo.

The Octavia is powered by a range of petrol and turbo-diesel engines ranging from 110kW, 2 liter FSI up to a 125kW, 2liter TDI and 147kW, 2 litre FSI four cylinder in the RS. Likewise, a 1.4 liter model will also be made available for Australia along with the five and six-speed manual transmissions with the addition of a six-speed VW-sourced DSG manual. The price of the Octavia is about $30,000.

Superb this is an essentially long-wheelbase version of the Octavia designed for the higher end of the market. The Superb is spacious offering extra legroom in the back and plenty of leather and luxury. The Superb is equipped with the Passats older 142kW, 2.8 liter V6 petrol and 120 kW, 2.5 liter six cylinder TDI engines which are both available with a tiptronic five-speed automatic.

This long-wheelbase sedan is available in Europe with a 110kW, turbocharged 1.8 liter and naturally aspirated 85 kW, 2 liter four cylinder engine. The price for the Superb is about $45,000.

Roomster this vehicle started as a funky concept car at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show while a production version was unveiled last year. The Roomster is distinguished by its high-set, van like styling. Its versatile, five-door concept is similar to the VW Caddy that is quickly converted from a five-seater into a load-lugging two-seater vehicle.

The Roomster Scout adds plastic-cladding around the body which provides it with an off-road look despite the fact that it is a front-wheel drive vehicle. The price of the Roomster is about $27,000.

In addition, Volkswagen also plans to introduce in Australia next year the VW Polo-sized Fabia. This Fabia was previously presented at the Geneva Motor Show. Likewise, by 2009 Volkswagen will launch a new generation version of its long-wheelbase Surperb sedan.

3 Dont get too caught up on the trade value as most never get payoff for their vehicle. Instead, look at the bottom line. If the dealer uses wholesale on your trade, make sure you get wholesale price on the used car you are buying.

4 Consider financing the used car for fewer months. Try doing 48 months if you can swing the payment. If you finance longer, try paying a little extra on months that you can.

5 Negotiate your best deal! After you have done this, tell the dealer they have a deal if they will pull a carfax report and everything is clean. Dont pay for a carfax yourself. Most dealers have an account where they can pull it for you.

6 Check the oil in the used car you are buying to make sure it has been changed. You can check inside the windshield, there will usually be a sticker telling when the next oil change is due. After you have exchanged information with the other party and the police officer you should go to the hospital to be examined by a doctor. Even if you feel fine, you may still be in shock and the adrenaline in your system my stop you from feeling pain initially. Most common injuries are back and neck related. You will need to take it east for at least a few days.

Your insurance company will have to be notified of the situation regarding what happened so that they can access damage costs and determine fault. If you are found at fault, you might owe money to the other party involved. If they are found at fault, they may owe you money. That depends on whether or not either of you decides to file a claim. Most likely you insurance payments will increase slightly, unfortunately.

Hopefully, that is all you will have to deal with. That is the very least you will need to do for a fender-bender. If the accident is fatal you will most likely have to go to court.
